"Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year." -Wikipedia
April 22, 1970 was the first Earth Day which stimulated 20 million Americans and is extensively credited with introducing the modern environmental movement. Soon after the first Earth Day, the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts, along with numerous other environmental laws, were passed. Working with over 50,000 partners in 192 countries, the Earth Day Network (EDN) works to expand and activate the environmental movement. At least 1 billion people now partake in Earth Day activities every year, which makes it the leading civic observance on the planet.
EDN’s purpose is to inform and motivate people to ensure a healthy future for themselves and upcoming generations by stimulating green economic policies. EDN delivers civic engagement opportunities locally, nationally, and globally and works to expand the definition of “environment” to embrace issues effecting health, communities, and environment. They do this through creating green jobs, schools, and encouraging the halt of water and air pollution.
