Picking The Right Wakeboard - OnlineWakeboards.com

Wakeboarding, like anything else, requires equipment that is right for you. Making sure you have the correct gear will make your experience more comfortable, safe, and enjoyable. Here are some tips to follow when picking out a wakeboard.

img8776

Pick the correct size. Wider and longer boards will land softer on the water since they offer more surface area to absorb the contact shock. They are best for heavier or taller riders. The larger the board the heavier it is so they do not flip or spin as fast as a smaller board. Generally, people follow this rule: someone six feet and over should ride a wakeboard between 138cm – 142cm. Five feet tall riders should ride a wakeboard 128cm – 134cm.

Pick equipment that fits your experience level. O’Brien, Hyperlite, and HO Sports make gear for beginner, intermediate, and experienced riders. Beginner boards have more squared edges, which offer more control and steadiness for those not ready for tricks. Riders with more experience favor wakeboards that have rounded edges since air tricks are easier to land. Rounded edges also allow the board to gain speed faster and prevent the edge of the water from catching while landing tricks.

Pay attention to the details. You may want a board that is faster and more consistent on the water, which helps land jumps easier, such as a continuous rocker. These boards have an even curve from tip to tail. On the other hand, you might be looking for a board to provide forceful lift off the wake and more control while going straight, such as a three-stage rocker, which have two distinct bends in the board. Also, keep in mind the difference in fins under your wakeboard. Fins assist your board with direction, so it does not rotate freely on the water.

Try out different boards before you buy to see what fits you best. Most pro shops will  permit you to try a board for a fee; however, many shops will eliminate the cost of the fee if you end up buying the board from them.

At Lighthouse Harbor Marina, our Ships' Store has a variety of wakeboards available to pick from. Check us out online at OnlineWakeboards.com or stop in today to see if we have the wakeboard you are looking for.

Giving Your Boat the Perfect Name

cartoon-boat-11

A boat is more than a vessel to get you on the water. It's a vessel to carry your family and friends around on unforgettable experiences. It's a way to spend time surrounded by nature and get to those unreachable fishing holes. With all the importance of your boat, doesn't it deserve a fitting name?

Here are some tips to help you name your boat perfectly:

Consider your boats personality - Boat owners know that each boat has her own personality. Your boat may be the relaxed, layed back type who's "Lallie Gagn", or perhaps she's the sleek, stylish kind like "Reeli Nauti", or maybe even the bold, look-at-me sort of boat that's "Limitless". Whatever her personality, make sure her name fits her.

Keep it short and sweet - Try to keep your boat's name one or two words. If you have to call for Mayday it's easier to spell out the name of your boat if it isn't a mouthful. A shorter name is easier to say and every second counts in an emergency.

Make it unique - Avoid using a name that you're likely to see a lot on the water. Pick a name for your boat that is special and unique, just like your boat. Some boat names are clever, but common, so try to avoid one that everyone's already thought of. Your boat should have a distinctive name that allows it to stand out from others.

Pick a name that has meaning - There are a lot of cute, clever boat names out there, but try to pick one that is meaningful. You spend a lot of time on your boat so give her a name that's special. It doesn't matter what other boaters think of your boat's name, they have their own boats to name. Pick a name that reflects how you feel while on your boat and what it symbolizes for you.

Unwritten Boating Rules Everyone Should Follow

There are quite a few rules and regulations everyone learns while taking their boating safety course; however, there are unwritten rules that aren't taught but should be followed. Hopefully you follow these unwritten rules:

  • Do not create a wake within 300 feet of a commercial dock - Wake is created around 5 MPH. Even if there are no signs, areas within 300 feet of a commercial boat dock are no wake areas. When someone is at their dock trying to balance themselves and their stuff and trying to get in or out of their boat, it's very inconvenient to be rocked by unnecessary wake. There are also a lot of people who swim off the dock so it's extremely dangerous for boats to be going fast enough to make a wake.
  • Do not hold up everyone else at the boat launch - It is very inconvenient waiting for someone to load their boat with coolers, fishing gear, and equipment while they're parked on the launch. You should remove your boat cover, load your boat, remove all tie-downs, and make sure your drain plug is in before you are at the launch. Once your boat is launched, quickly move your vehicle out of the way so the next boater can enjoy their day not waiting in line.
  • Do not leave hooks on the dock - While fishing from the dock or loading and unloading fishing gear from your boat, make sure your hooks are not laying exposed on the dock. A fishing hook can easily be stepped on by someone walking barefoot on the dock, or by a pet.
  • Do not anchor too close to another boat - One of the most relaxing things to do on your boat is nothing at all. It's wonderful to go into a quiet cove, anchor your boat, and sunbathe, swim, or fish. Generally boaters who are anchored away from activity are looking for privacy. Allow enough room between your boat and another boat for both to swing around their anchors and have sufficient privacy.

Boating is a wonderful activity that should be enjoyed without inconveniencing anyone else. By following these unwritten rules, we can all enjoy the water together!

Water Tubing Safety Tips - PoconoActionSports.com

master-OBR043 Tubing is one of the most enjoyable activities you can do on the water. It is fun for adults and children! Just like every other water sports activity, you should always be safe and we have put together some tips on how to do just that.

1. Always wear a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) – A PFD should always be worn by the rider to ensure safety if they should be separated from the boat.

2. Know your equipment – The manufacturer has recommendations for size, weight, age limits, towing speed, and number of riders for their products. Be familiar with these recommendations and follow them.

3. Know your rider – Never put the rider’s safety at risk. Know the experience and comfort level of the rider and do not exceed them. The rider should always feel safe.

4. Know the water regulations – Bodies of water have different regulations to keep boaters safe. Be familiar with the regulations of the body of water you are playing on, including towing speeds.

5. Have someone to spot – A “spotter” should be a person onboard to keep a lookout for the rider. The spotter can alert the driver when a rider has fallen off the tube so the driver can focus on approaching obstacles.

6. Be a responsible driver – Just like operating a car, the boat operator should know the rules and regulations and should be alert and sober. Many boaters enjoy the water at the same time, so the driver should be attentive to other boats and possible hazards like rocks, docks, and buoys.

7. Make sure your towline is secure - In addition to making sure the towline is securely attached to the boat, you should always check it for fraying or wear and tear. Only use a rope that is designated for towing inflatables and replace it if it shows signs of damage.

8. Check before you start – Make sure your rider is all set to go before you start. If there is more than one rider, they should understand how to steady and balance their weight and all riders should have a secure grip on the tube.

9. Use extreme caution when pulling multiple tubes – Keep an extra careful eye on the tubes when you are towing more than one at the same time. Make sure the tubes do not collide or crash into each other and travel the boat at a slower speed.

10. Handle wakes with caution – When crossing wakes, slow the boat down so the tube does not bounce off the wakes. If riders are stomach-down when hitting wakes at fast speeds it can cause back injury.

If you are safe while tubing, it can be one of the most fun experiences on the water. Use caution and common sense and have fun while you visit the Poconos and Lake Wallenpaupack!

The Right Life Jacket For You!

Kids-with-Life-Jackets1

Where would you think most drownings occur? Most likely at sea, right? That's actually not the case! Nine out of ten drownings occur in inland waters and most involve boats that are less than 20-feet long. Almost 85% of victims of drowning are not wearing a life jacket! In just 60 seconds an adult can drown and a child can drown in just 20 seconds. Most victims chose not to wear a life jacket that was available to them. It's not only important to wear a life jacket, it's important to wear the right life jacket for you.

In Pennsylvania, children 13 years and younger are required by Federal Regulations to wear a life jacket when not in an enclosed cabin or below deck. There must be a wearable life jacket for each person on board your vessel. There are many different types of life jackets depending on your boating activities.

To ensure you have the right life jacket for you, try it on and make sure it fits snugly. It should keep your chin above water and should not ride up on the body. Care for your life jacket correctly to keep it in good condition.

A life jacket will only work if you wear it! For more information on care, maintenance, and finding the right life jacket for you, here is a great guide!
